INTERVIEW with Petra and Shaun from www.theglobalcouple.com

You are probably wondering who is standing behind the name – The Global Couple. As you can guess from the name, they are in fact a couple – Petra and Shaun. They are from New Zealand, and are currently living in Canada(can’t say I’m not jelaous!). Petra has worked as a climate scientist and has a Masters degree in geography. And Shaun is a project manager and a carpenter, who loves beer.  Their stories are very interesting, and their photos are amazing. All of the photos used in this post are from their blog. They were kind enough to answer a few of my questions. You can find below my interview with this fascinating couple and look through some of their photos. For more information and exciting stories you can find them here – www.theglobalcouple.com .

about

What was that particular moment or trip that made you decide to become travel writers?

We’ve always liked keeping a record of our travels in handwritten journals, but it was our trip to Southeast Asia in 2013 that kick-started us writing about our travels on a blog. We found it was a better way for friends and family to keep up to date with what we are doing, and now that our blog is bigger we can offer advice and trip suggestions to other travellers too!

What are the top 5 destinations you would recommend?

New Zealand (of course – that’s where we’re from!), Myanmar/Burma, Rome – Italy, Bali – Indonesia, New York City – USA.

How many countries have you been to?

Together we have visited 16 countries.

Do you have a bucket list? If yes, please share it with us!

Absolutely! It grows constantly! http://www.theglobalcouple.com/bucket-list/

Do you read other blogs for inspiration?

Yes, most certainly. We love getting suggestions of things to do in places we’re visiting, as well as photo inspiration and to improve our writing skills too! Favourites include www.alexinwanderland.com, www.youngadventuress.com, www.wanderlusters.com

What is the life of travel writers like?

Pretty darn good! We get to do what we love (travel) and share our stories and photos with the world!

You have a page named “Beer”, tell us more about it.

Shaun has a passion for craft beer – something that is relatively new in New Zealand. So when we headed to the United States he was keen to try lots of different kinds of beer and blog about it! We’ve recently moved to Vancouver, Canada where there is a huge craft beer scene, so expect more beer-related posts soon!

What is the first thing you do when planning a trip?

Look at Google Images for inspiration, then get a guide book out of the library.

Have you ever been somewhere that was so bad that you couldn’t write about it?

Nope! All experiences, good and bad, are worth writing about. It gives us a balanced blog – who wants to read about happy things all the time right?

There are probably a lot of people thinking “I want to be a travel writer”. Dare to share some advice with our readers?

Do it. Travel is the best thing you can spend money on – as that old quote says “Travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer.” Writing about travel is really fun, you get to relive your experiences and share them with many others!
